Volunteers help people by boosting their self-esteem making them feel less isolated as well as offering a friendly ear to listen which can make a huge difference to someone’s life.
People give up their time to volunteer for all sorts of reasons – some want to “give something back” after they have been helped through their own mental health illness while others are looking for practical experience.
Natalie Miles, Volunteer Co-ordinator for SWR Mind said: “We’re looking for people who are able to spare a couple of hours a week, have an ability to be empathetic and a willingness to engage with our new volunteer induction training.
“Any particular skills or hobbies that you may have such as an interest in local history, sports or baking for example and are willing to share could be a huge benefit.
“SWR Mind and our service users are all appreciative of the help and support that our volunteers are enable us to help people facing a wide range of challenges.”
Chris Swaine, who used to volunteer with SWR Mind on a one to one basis and is now a member of its board of trustees added: "Since my time with SWR Mind, I have been able to help people with their problems and because we met socially they felt they could relax.
“By recognising the problems they had, it helped me to recognise my own strengths and weaknesses and be of more help to them.
“I feel privileged to have helped people and have learnt a lot in the process.”
In return for volunteering the charity gives people all the support they need to do the role including regular volunteer meetings, all out of pocket expenses paid and references for employment or study.
