Urgent Funding Appeal

2nd April 2015

2nd April 2015

Regrettably SWR Mind is currently facing funding instability and uncertainty with regards to future funding and we are having to restrict accepting any referrals that are for long-term support or require staff intervention. Therefore, only volunteer support will be available which limits referrals where there is any element of risk or the mental health issue is more severe than stress, depression or anxiety.

We are unable to give an indication at the present time how long this restriction will apply.

We regret having to make this decision, but our circumstances are such at present that it would be unfair on service users to offer an expectation of long-term support which we would be unable to deliver.‚Äč

Please be assured that we are doing everything within our power to bring the organisation into a more positive financial position.

We are making this local appeal for funds to the residents of Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale so that the 1 in 4 people living in our area who are likely to suffer mental health difficulties at some time will have somewhere they can turn to for help and support and will not have to endure mental ill health alone.

If just 2000 people donated £10 each we can avoid imminent closure and the loss of this valuable organisation, but please donate what you can.

SWR Mind is an independent provider of high quality, recovery-focused mental health services across Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale.

Our services help over 800 people experiencing mental health difficulties every year. Our support helps people towards recovery, social inclusion, learning, volunteering and employment.

Times of austerity also mean that more people are coming to SWR Mind in crisis, desperate for support, as other services are cut.

SWR Mind have funding streams to maintain nearly all of their services but the funding crisis results from a lack of core funding to support premises, administration and management costs, without which we are unable to function. Despite being affiliated to the national Mind brand, our services are funded without support from the national charity and the proceeds from local Mind charity shops go directly to national Mind.

“To lose a prominent and respected provider of mental health services across Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale would be catastrophic for the people with mental health issues that we support. It would also increase the demand on statutory services at a time when they are already under significant pressure.” Duncan Webster, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, SWR Mind

“SWR Mind has been a vital support to many people including carers and the person they care for. We refer our clients into these services knowing the support they will receive is second to none. It will be a very significant loss to the community if these services are no longer available for all to access. Mental health still has a stigma within society and without voluntary sector organisations like SWR Mind to raise the profile many more people would continue to suffer in silence”. Elizabeth McPherson, Chief Officer, Scarborough & Ryedale Carers Resource

“I have been using mind for a number of years to refer my service users on to, on their next step of recovery. I know they have found the service very helpful and it would leave a big gap in their recovery, if they could no longer access the help Mind provide them.” Julie Johnson, Support Worker, Mental Health Matters

“All too often mental health issues are swept under the carpet or it is assumed that those suffering depression or upset are best treated by those in hospitals or other large impersonal organisations. Yet in truth, the best most effective work is done quietly at grass roots level, within the community of those who suffer. Understanding for those who suffer and their family is a vital part of the jigsaw of mental health issues – SWR Mind understands this and their work is vital in helping all of those who suffer start to cope, comprehend and manage this most difficult of health issues.” Dorinda Wolfe Murray, CEO, FirstLight Trust

“Ryedale Carers Support works very closely with SWR Mind. Our services complement each other; when clients experience a sudden trauma such as bereavement or pronounced social isolation and loneliness, the specialist skills of the Mind support workers are an invaluable resource for us to call on. Please do not let the expertise of Mind workers, built up over many years go to waste through lack of funding.” Claire Hall, Manager, Ryedale Carers Support

“There is no other local mental health organisation that offers the spectrum that Mind does. They are a key partner in the local whole system of mental health services with an experienced and well respected team of paid staff, volunteers and trustees.” Paul Hyde, General Manager, mental health services

“The Cambridge Centre are proud to work in partnership with SWR Mind who offer a valuable direction and insight into working with vulnerable people within the local community. SWR Mind offer their invaluable experience with and commitment to mental health intervention and work in partnership with drug and alcohol treatment services in the Scarborough, Whitby, and Ryedale area.” Jo Machin, Innovations and Development Manager, Cambridge Centre
