Join us in a jam-packed day of family fun and games to raise vital funds for SWR Mind

Who says sports days are just for kids? Teams of all ages and abilities are wanted to battle it out at a day of fun and games to raise much needed money for us.

The MINDGames event on Sunday 26 July starting at 2pm is in aid of our life-saving charity that supports 1,000 vulnerable people with mental illness each year across the local area.

Families, friends and work colleagues from across the region are all invited to take up the challenge at McCain Sports Field in Osgodby Road, Scarborough for just £20 per team with all proceeds going to our seven projects, some of which save lives.

There will be everything from the traditional wheelbarrow, sack and egg and spoon races to javelin discus and shot putt.  However, the highlight is likely to be a giant Hungry Hippos game based on the children’s board game favourite.

There will also be plenty more happening on the day including pony rides, a bouncy castle, bubble football, sumo wrestling, face painting, a visit from a vintage fire engine, a toy stall, Chinese auction and music from community station, Radio Scarborough’s wireless wagon.

People can also enjoy a drink in the beer tent and there will also be ice cream, a burger bar and crepe stall which will be serving up refreshments.

Teams already taking part include staff from Yorkshire Coast Homes, Scarborough Hospital, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, Compass Gym and Albert Public House in Scarborough as well as a number of families.

MINDGames is being put on by a kind-hearted group of friends from Scarborough who call themselves Wonkey McDonky Fundraising team and raise cash for different good causes every year.

Organiser Trevor Landray from Cayton said: “When we saw that SWR Mind was under threat of closure we wanted to do everything we could to make sure this didn’t happen.

“Many of our team suffer from different mental health issues and to see such an important service disappear would be a tragedy.

“It’s going to be a family event and we are encouraging teams of all ages and abilities to take part. We are still coming up with games at this late hour to ensure that people have a great day.

“We also have a lot of other things happening on the day for people who have come to spectate. People can also bring a stall to sell their wares for just £5 per stall.

“It’s the most ambitious fund-raiser we have ever undertaken and we are hoping that people will come and support us supporting one of the town’s most treasured necessities.”

The sports day starts at 2pm and people can register on the day from 1pm to 1.45pm.
