Chance to learn about chocolate - and volunteering

5th November 2015

A top Scarborough chocolatier will be sharing his secrets of how to make delicious chocolate treats at a Christmas-themed fund-raiser – and you get to eat them too.

Alex Grant of Crofts Chocolates is hosting the demonstration event where chocolate-lovers can learn how to make tasty Christmas decorations and delicious desserts with proceeds going to leading local mental health charity Scarborough Whitby and Ryedale Mind (SWR Mind).

The event takes place on Thursday 26 November starting at 6pm until 8pm at the Filling Station at Scarborough’s The Street in Lower Clark Street.

Tickets costs just £5 (cash only) with all money raised going to help local people experiencing mental health difficulties many of whom are completely isolated and have no other support – something which people need more than ever as Christmas approaches.

Prior to the event, at 5pm until 6pm, we will be hosting a taster session for people interested in volunteering for the charity.

A whole host of exciting opportunities are on offer from giving one to one support to someone with a mental health problem on a short, medium or long term basis – something which the charity says can be hugely rewarding for volunteers but can be life changing for the person they help.

We are also in need of people who are interested in sharing knowledge of mindfulness, relaxation and alternative therapies at the charity’s support groups and with the charity’s 50 current volunteers.

The charity is also desperate for fund-raisers interested in joining a committee as well as people interested in providing administrative support in the office or conducting research into mental health.

Head of Services, Sophie Hall said: “Christmas can be a very stressful time, particularly for anyone with a mental health problem, and if you are on your own it can be very lonely.

"One of the things we do is make sure all those people we help at our support groups gets a card and present from us, this can often be the only card and present they get.

“We’re also at the end of the phone for anyone that wants to talk who needs support. Our side by side support workers and volunteers will also be giving their own help and advice to people on getting through the Christmas period.

“By becoming a volunteer with our charity it is chance to make new friends, learn new skills, boost confidence while helping your local community.”

Tickets priced £5 for the Christmas Chocolate Event can be purchased from Crofts Chocolates at 28 Newborough and The Filling Station. They will also be available on the door.

SWR Mind will also be hosting another Volunteer Taster session on Wednesday 18 November from 5.30pm until 6.30pm (registration from 5pm) at Scarborough Dial A Ride, 4 Londesborough Business Park, 64-66 Londesborough Road, Scarborough.

The actual training sessions will take place at Scarborough Dial A Ride over three sessions on Wednesday evenings on 25 November, 2 December and 9 December.
